Safety

It has never been easier to to purchase a canoe or kayak and take to the water, especially with the great packages that are available that seem to include all you need to become a kayaker. But unlike most watersports a day of exhilaration in a kayak can soon turn into tragedy without formal training and awareness of the dangers that may lie ahead of you.

In Ireland all paddle sports are backed up by the Irish Canoe Union (ICU) who have in place a training infrastructure to support clubs and help them not only sustain core skills but safe practices too.

If you are interested in the sport then the first step is to join a local club such as the Donegal Canoe Club and get some training.

You MUST be able to swim … at least 25 metres and have the ability remain confident in water which is vital.

ALWAYS wear a buoyancy aid … and you should consider a helmet too!

NEVER paddle alone! Remember… “Less than 3 should never be”

Do not attempt to boat on rivers without ICU training! …even slow moving rivers can present many dangers, especially weirs.
